In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, education is changing rapidly. One of the biggest shifts is the move toward personalized learning—an approach that tailors education to each student's unique needs, strengths, and interests. With the help of digital tools and online platforms, personalized learning is becoming more accessible and effective.
In my last post, we discussed how online tutoring helps students build their identities as learners by offering personalized, one-on-one support. Today, we’ll look at how the digital age has created new opportunities for personalized learning and how these tools are not only helping students succeed but also shaping the future of education. However, as personalized learning becomes more popular, it’s important to ask some tough questions. Critics argue that these technologies, meant to make education more personal, might actually be “de-personalizing” it. Instead of focusing on the individual student, they could be pushing corporate agendas and making learning more standardized.
To understand this better, we can take a step back and look at the history of personalized learning. By examining how these ideas and practices emerged, we can uncover the hidden influences behind them. Drawing on the work of philosopher Michel Foucault, we can see how what seems like a natural shift in education might actually have deeper, less obvious roots–shaped by corporate interest and technology. By exploring this history, we can better understand the potential risks and challenges of personalized learning as it continues to evolve.

Personalized learning means tailoring education to fit each student's unique needs, strengths, and interests, rather than using a “one-size-fits-all” approach. This means students can learn at their own pace, in ways that suit their learning styles, which often leads to higher engagement and better outcomes. While personalized learning isn’t a new idea, technology has made it more exciting and effective. With digital tools, teachers can gather data, track progress, and give real-time feedback in ways that weren’t possible before. This allows for more flexible, adaptive learning experiences that help students stay motivated and achieve their goals.
One example of personalized learning in action is Teach to One: Math. In 2016, Bill Gates called Teach to One “the future of math.” It started in New York City as School of One in 2011, then expanded nationally as Teach to One when the program partnered with philanthropies and investors. The program aligns with Common Core standards and uses technology to create personalized learning paths for students. Teach to One uses algorithms to decide what lessons students should work on, based on their learning history, strengths, and needs. Students get a "playlist" of lessons, and after each one, they take a short quiz called an "Exit Ticket" to test their understanding. The results help update their learning profile, and the system adjusts their lessons accordingly.
While this approach gives students a personalized learning experience, it also means that the software, not the teacher, decides what, when, and how students learn. Teachers don’t have their own classrooms; instead, they monitor lessons assigned by the system and help guide students through them. While Teach to One and other similar platforms can make learning more personalized, some critics worry that these systems might rely too much on technology and data. By letting algorithms control the learning process, they argue, we risk losing the human touch that teachers bring to the classroom. The question becomes: how much should technology control learning, and how much should teachers? As we continue exploring the future of personalized learning, it’s important to consider how much influence technology should have in shaping students' educational experiences.
